Need to Know....

  • Attendance Support Worker

We would like to welcome Kevin Mapplebeck as the new Attendance Support Worker at E.B. Chandler, Spring Street Academy, West Highlands and Amherst Regional High. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development has hired Attendance Support Workers to assist students and families experiencing challenges with absenteeism and late arrivals.  We welcome you to contact our Attendance Support Worker, Mr. Kevin Mapplebeck (mapplebeckk@ccrsb.ca) or your child’s school to discuss potential strategies for improving absenteeism and late arrivals. Students can be dropped off any time after 8:25 am when playground supervision begins. Our entry bell is at 8:35 am and instruction officially begins at 8:45 am.

  • Primary Registration - March 1

Registration for our incoming 2018-19 Primary students will take place on Thursday, March 1 at SSA. If you live within the Spring Street Academy catchment area, please call our school (902-661-2499) to book an appointment time for that day. Those students applying for Early French Immersion who live outside our catchment area still need to register at their home school.

  • Playground Access Notice

Keeping our students safe is important to all of us. For that reason and in response to concerns raised by parents and staff, we ask that the playground area be reserved to students and staff only between the hours of 8:25 AM and 2:45 PM. All parents/guardians/siblings/pets are kindly asked to remain outside the playground area. As such, we ask that our families accompany their children to the edge of our playground at the beginning of the day and allow their children to play/socialize independently until the bell rings. Children will walk to their designated entry door on their own. We also encourage parents/guardians who pick up their children at the end of the day to wait along the edge of the playground and establish a meeting spot in those areas.

The playground is an extension of our school and often used as an outdoor classroom throughout the day.  The same check-in process is necessary for the playground as inside our building. Parents/guardians who wish to be on the playground within the hours noted above are required to sign into the office and pick up a visitor’s tag. An exception to this guideline will be made for our licensed daycare providers who drop off/pick up a number of children each day. These changes are supported by our School Advisory Council which is comprised of parents, community members and staff.

  • Protect Kids Online - A Resource for Parents

ProtectKidsOnline.ca regularly gleans information from Cybertip.ca to keep parents informed about age-specific online interests of young people and the risks they may encounter while engaging in those activities – for example, while playing on gaming apps – and providing parents with proactive strategies for making their child’s online experiences safer. Check out this great tool to help parents keep children of all ages safe online!

  • Allergy Safe

This is a reminder that Spring Street Academy endeavors to be an allergy safe school so please help us to keep our students safe.  We have several students with life threatening allergies. There are many nut free snacks available and we would ask that parents NOT send items containing nuts of any kind to school (including peanut butter and Nutella). Though we cannot guarantee that those items will not show up from time to time we try to be vigilant. Please make us aware in the office of any students who have severe allergies of any kind.

  • February Menu

Please be advised that the February cafeteria menu is posted on this site. It can be found under the About SSA tab labeled "cafeteria menu."

  • Looking for Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers to help out with our breakfast program and our library program on an ongoing basis. Please contact the school at 661-2499 if you are interested in either.

    Thank you!

  • Student Arrival on Playground

Parents and guardians are reminded that students are NOT to be on school grounds before 8:25 am in the morning. Morning supervision does not begin at school until then and the safety and security of your child is at risk as a result. Thank you for your helping us to keep your children safe.

  • A message from our APD School Resource Officer

    Dear Parents/Guardians,

It’s hard to believe that another school year is upon us!

As some of you know I am the Amherst Police Department’s School Resource Officer. This will be my 4th year at Spring Street Academy. My role is to work with the staff, students and parents to support a safe learning environment. The purpose of this letter is to raise awareness of an ongoing safety concern, what we are asking of the students and parents, and the follow up action you can expect.

The high traffic volumes during the times students are dropped off and picked increase the risk of a child being struck by a vehicle. Traffic signs which restrict/prohibit parking/stopping are in place to address this safety concern.

There is a “No Stopping” zone on the west side of Charles Street from the intersection with Spring Street to the cut in. The cut in is designated as a “No Parking” zone.

On the east side of Charles Street there is a “No Stopping” zone from the intersection of Spring Street to Dunlap St. which prohibits stopping at specified time periods. This is to prevent children being required to cross the street after being dropped off.

In a “No Parking” zone you can stop your vehicle just long enough to, give your child a kiss and then leave the area. In a “No Stopping” zone you cannot stop for any reason, even if it is just a few seconds to drop off your child. Parking is available at the bottom end of Charles Street past Dunlap Street, and the bottom end of Academy Street and Dickey Street.

The “Staff Parking” Lot is designated for staff only. Parents are not to use the staff parking lot as children use the staff parking lot to gain access to the playground.

APD officers and school staff will be monitoring the area for compliance. Officers will be conducting enforcement which could include the issuing of a ticket. This is all being done to ensure the safety of your children. Please help to keep your children safe by obeying the posted traffic signs and arranging for a safe location to meet your child. Encourage your child to use crosswalks and to be alert to possible roadway dangers.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

I look forward to a safe and fun year!
